Verdict of the Court and Verdict of the People

From the statement of USSR State
Prosecutor comrade A. Ia. Vishinskii. Comrade judges, members of the
Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR, as I start my opening
statement for this trial, which in itself presents an
exceptional occurrence with unusual social and
political consequences, I would like first of all to draw your attention
to several characteristic features of this case, to several striking
particulars of this case. One year ago comrade Stalin,
analysing the imperfections of our work on the liquidation
of Trotskyists and others made a statement about
saboteurs, spies and so forth. Now I think it is clear for all, that the
saboteurs and diversionists in question, Now I think it is clear for all, that the
saboteurs and diversionists in question, no matter which flag they mask themselves
with, Trotskyist or Bukharinist, have ceased to represent any
political current or a labor movement; that they have turned into a
unscrupulous and valueless gang of professional saboteurs, diversionists,
spies and murderers. It is obvious that these gentlemen need to be
uprooted and mercilessly ground to bits as enemies of the working class
and traitors to our motherland. This is clear and needs no further
explanations. A year has passed … …the threat of a just Soviet punishment.
All our country, from young to old, is waiting for and
demanding one thing: the traitors and spies who sold our
country out must be shot like mad dogs. Our people demand one thing:
smash the wretched viper. At 4AM March 13, the Military Collegium
of the Supreme Court convicted the
anti-Soviet Trotsky-ite Coalition.
