Tribunal finds Crown in breach over Te Rohe Pōtae claims

The Waitangi Tribunal has found
the Crown breached the Treaty and caused serious damage to
the iwi and hapu of Te Rohe Potae. The reports focussed on 277 claims
concerning Crown actions in the Rohe Potae district which covers North Taranaki
to South Waikato. It found land transactions to build
the main trunk railway in the 1880s, and land purchases
to promote settlement, had a devastating social,
economic and cultural impact. The Crown is negotiating the Ngati Maniapoto
claims settlement at present. The Tribunal says it’s issuing
this part of the report in order to assist the parties
with their negotiations.
